🌮 Street Food Guide — Tacos, Tortas & Tamales
Street food is the heart of Mexican eating. Forget sit-down restaurants — the best food in Mexico is found at roadside puestos (stalls), market counters, and taco stands. Here's what to order:
Tacos al Pastor
The king of Mexican street food. Marinated pork carved from a vertical spit (like shawarma), topped with pineapple, cilantro, and onion on a small corn tortilla. Order 3–5 for a meal. MXN 30–60 ($1.80–$3.50) for a plate of 4.
Tacos de Canasta
The cheapest food in Mexico. These "basket tacos" are pre-made, steamed in a cloth-lined basket, and sold from bicycles and street carts for MXN 10–20 ($0.60–$1.20) each. Fillings include beans, potato, chicharrón, and mole. Perfect for breakfast on the go.
Tortas
Massive filled sandwiches on telera bread. Fillings range from milanesa (breaded meat) to ham and cheese to cochinita pibil. One torta is a full meal. MXN 40–70 ($2.35–$4.10).
Tamales
Corn dough (masa) with filling, wrapped in a corn husk or banana leaf and steamed. Sold everywhere from morning carts to evening street corners. MXN 10–20 ($0.60–$1.20) each. Two tamales + an atole (warm corn drink) = a $2 breakfast.
