🚇 CDMX Metro — $0.30 Per Ride

Mexico City's metro is one of the cheapest and most extensive in the world — 12 lines, 195 stations, and a flat fare of MXN 5 ($0.30) per ride regardless of distance. It covers most tourist areas including Centro Histórico, Chapultepec, Coyoacán, and the bus terminals.

You'll need a MI card (rechargeable smart card, MXN 16 deposit) available at any station. The metro runs 5am–midnight weekdays and 6am–midnight on weekends. Avoid rush hours (7–9am and 6–8pm) when trains are extremely crowded.

The Metrobús (bus rapid transit) costs MXN 7 ($0.40) and covers routes the metro doesn't, including Reforma Avenue and connections to the airport. The same MI card works for both systems.

💡 Monthly transport cost in CDMX: Using metro + occasional Uber, most travelers spend MXN 850–1,360 ($50–80/month) on transport. That's less than a single monthly metro pass in London or NYC.

🚌 ADO Long-Distance Buses

ADO is Mexico's premium bus network — and it's excellent. First-class ADO buses have reclining seats, AC, WiFi, power outlets, and onboard bathrooms. They're the most comfortable and safest way to travel between cities.

💡 Save on ADO: Book on the ADO website 1–2 weeks ahead for 20–40% discounts. Overnight buses save a night's accommodation. ADO GL and ADO Platino are premium tiers — regular ADO first-class is the best value.

🚐 Colectivos — The Cheapest Way to Travel

Colectivos are shared minivans that run fixed routes between towns and neighborhoods. They're the cheapest transport in Mexico at MXN 10–25 ($0.60–$1.50) per ride. You'll find them everywhere outside major cities.

They leave when full (no fixed schedule), which usually means a 5–20 minute wait. Pay the driver in cash when you board. To get off, say "bajan" (getting off) or knock on the ceiling.

Colectivos are perfect for short-to-medium distances: Playa del Carmen to Tulum (MXN 45, $2.65), between Oaxacan villages, or from towns to beach areas. For long distances (6+ hours), ADO buses are more comfortable.

📱 Uber, DiDi & InDriver

Ride-hailing apps are cheap, safe, and widely available in Mexican cities. Uber operates in CDMX, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Mérida, Cancún, and most large cities. DiDi is often 10–20% cheaper than Uber. InDriver lets you name your price.

AppTypical ride (3–5km)Best for
UberMXN 50–100 ($3–6)Most reliable, widest coverage
DiDiMXN 40–85 ($2.35–5)Cheapest in most cities
InDriverMXN 35–80 ($2–4.70)Name your price (negotiate)
⚠️ Airport taxi rule: Never take unofficial street taxis at airports. Always use the official taxi booth inside the terminal (prepaid, fixed price) or order an Uber from the arrivals area. CDMX airport to Centro: MXN 200–350 ($12–21).

✈️ Domestic Flights — Volaris & VivaAerobus

Mexico's budget airlines offer incredibly cheap domestic flights. Volaris and VivaAerobus are the main budget carriers, with fares starting as low as MXN 800 ($47) one-way for popular routes.

💡 Flight hack: Volaris and VivaAerobus fares are carry-on only. Checked bags add MXN 300–600 ($18–35). Pack light with a 10kg carry-on to get the advertised price. Book on Tuesday/Wednesday for the cheapest fares, 3–6 weeks ahead.

🚗 Car Rental — Worth It?

Car rental in Mexico costs MXN 500–1,200 ($29–70) per day for a basic compact car. However, full insurance is mandatory and adds $15–25/day on top. Gas costs about MXN 23/liter ($4.90/gallon). Toll roads (cuotas) can add MXN 100–500 per route.

When a car is worth it: Exploring the Yucatán peninsula (cenotes, ruins, beaches), driving the Oaxacan coast, or visiting small towns not served by buses.

When it's not: City stays (parking is a nightmare and Uber is cheap), major city-to-city routes (ADO buses are easier and comparable in cost), or if you're on a tight budget.

⚠️ Rental car warnings: Always buy full insurance (CDW + liability). Never decline — one fender-bender without insurance can cost thousands. Use a credit card with rental car coverage for extra protection. Take photos of any existing damage before driving off the lot.
